Singer, Songwriter, musician, & Tech-advocate Alan Chapell has something to say about our high-tech computer world and has his latest single entitled "I Am Zuck", a confession of Facebook's president and owner Mark Zuckerberg. Not only is Chapell a musician singer and songwriter, he's a tech advisor who helps out companies and corporations with privacy issues.
I recently spoke with Alan and he said I've sort of been involved with what they call the new media since 1996 and I studied human rights laws and in my other job when not performing or writing I advise tech companies about privacy issues, so I have a fair amount of experience in sort of experiencing the business side of Facebook, and so one night after having a couple of glasses of wine and maybe or maybe not a little marijuana I started writing this song and you know some of the songs you don't know where it's going to go and so you let it take you
where you just sort of let the song go where ever for the joke of it at first, so I started writing these words down and going if you're Mark Zuckerberg and you just testified in front of congress and you now want to look at your audience and say this is the real, and this is what is really going on, and that's really the concept of the song it's a self-parody confessional that'll never happen for Mark Zuckerberg where he tells you what's really going on so if you tell me who you're voting for i'll shop it, if you catch me sharing your data i'll promise to stop it, and I kept laughing to myself as I kept writing it and said well it's probably not that bad and kept making things up saying well their practices can't really be that bad, and this of course was two or three years ago when I wrote this, and of course the last couple of years things have happened and I think they've gone sort of way beyond anything anyone could imagine happening at this point like sharing election information, sharing personal data information and then lying about it, and so that's the concept of the song it's supposed to be funny, but as i've played it out live it comes off a little scary but sometimes then the truth is scary. This is a really big theme in this last album because I was around when the internet was was supposed to change everything perhaps naieve in a sense of optimism a sense of overthrowing the evil empire, and now it's morphed into this horrible thing from where it started twenty years ago , you know it's great on some levels, but not on others like now you really don't have a record industry, I mean I get what they were trying to do you know napster and some of those other guys look where were at now most of the money goes to the tech guys and very little goes to the artists. It's a grind but I enjoy playing out live i've been getting bigger and better opts to play in front of bigger audiences and you just continue to hope as you keep building and making noise that the money will follow to.
